Amazing Insights on Meditation from Kurt Steele

Insights from the Book of Psalms in Hebrew

I want to write about stillness and silence.  Psalm 1:2 says to meditate on the Law of God.  Psalm 46:10 declares, “Be still and know that I am God…”  What is stillness?  The hebrew verb, רפה raphah, to be still means to slacken off, to leave alone, to become weak and even to fail. Interestingly, it comes from the same root as the Hebrew for “doctor” (rophe), which is rapha (רָפָא) – to cure, cause to heal, repair or to make whole.  I love this that it comes from the same root that is tied to healing.  Could the discipline of ceasing to strive be healing?

One benefit of silence is we can “know that He is God”, and this is not knowing in our intellect, but rather ידע yada` – knowing by intimate experience and informed acquaintance.  We clearly see in the Psalms that this is a huge benefit.
